City of mosaics, a treasure chest of art, history and culture, Ravenna was capital three times between the 5th and 8th centuries: the magnificence of this period has left relevant evidence. This artistic expression, a union of symbolism and realism of Roman and Byzantine influences, was declared World Heritage by UNESCO: from Mausoleo di Galla Placidia that conceals a treasure chest of infinite stars, to the refined composition that adorns the Battistero Neoniano also seen in the Battistero degli Ariani.
Not less impressive is the magnificence of the Basilica of Sant’Apollinare Nuovo, erected by Ostrogoth King Theodoric the Great and the Cappella di Sant’ Andrea, where the triumphant Christ is celebrated. The Mausoleo di Teodorico is majestic, with its massive roof of Istrian stone, and the Basilica of San Vitale is the greatest masterpiece of early Christian art and architecture. Not to be forgotten the Basilica di Sant’Apollinare in Classe whose apse exalts Christ and St Apollinaris, the first bishop and patron saint of the city. There are many more attractions and monuments: Ravenna is the city where Dante Alighieri’s remains are preserved and his memory is kept alive with enchanting cultural events. Ravenna has important museums: among them MAR (City Art Museum of Ravenna) with both temporary art exhibitions and permanent collections and the National Museum of Ravenna, with a varied display of collections, including findings from excavations of Roman and Byzantine sites and in addition the Museo Arcivescovile, Museo Dantesco and Museo del Risorgimento.
Ravenna today?...It’s Roman, Gothic, Byzantine, but also medieval, Venetian and contemporary, civilized and hospitable, rich in cultural events and shows of international status that projects it into the future.
Ravenna is a coastal town with nine seaside resorts stretching along 30km of coastline. Our shores, blended harmoniously between the coast and the valleys, offer visitors wide sandy beaches surrounded by pine forests that were depicted by Dante and Byron.
The organization at the seaside is efficient and dynamic, in one word Romagnola. One can choose between a holiday of sun and relaxation or sporting activities on the beach; opt for a romantic restaurant by the sea or a typical Romagna tavern, dancing at the beach or the cheerful atmosphere of happy hour.
There is also the new tourist port, Marinara.
The area of Ravenna has striking, unique and varied natural surroundings, between the lagoons of Parco Regionale del Delta del Po (Regional Park of the Po Delta) and the historic saltpans of Cervia (Salina di Cervia).
Punte Alberete (flooded forest) and the Pialassa Baiona (saltwater lagoon) convey amazing proof of the ancient swamplands that surrounded Ravenna a long time ago. These areas, that were a shelter for Garibaldi and his beloved Anita, are home to rare species of birds and for this reason are popular destinations for those passionate about bird watching.
The mouth of the Bavano River, the only one still untouched in the northern Adriatic, winds through a fascinating landscape of continuously changing dunes.
The pine forests of San Vitale and Classe, natural mosaics of umbrella pines, hawthorn blossoms and still waters were praised by Dante, Botticelli, Boccaccio, Byron, Oscar Wilde and D’Annunzio.
The south entrance of the Po delta park is the saltern of Cervia recognized by the Ramsar Convention as wetlands of international importance for its high natural and landscape value. The environment is populated by species such as flamingos, black-winged stilts, avocets and many other protected species. In the saltern of Cervia you can find historical and economical themes related to the production of salt. Inland, housed in the historic “Palazzone” of Sant’Alberto, are the headquarters of NatuRA, the Natural Science museum of Ravenna that contains a wide historic collection of local fauna.
